When F. Scott Fitzgerald first wrote The Great Gatsby in 1925, I’m not sure he would have envisaged the background to his book being the inspiration for brides all over the world. But with its 1920’s theme of glamour, elegance and excess the roaring twenties is proving to be a huge draw for couples planning their big day.
With the arrival of The Great Gatsby in cinemas in spring 2013, the style and glamour of the 1920’s looks set to be a popular trend throughout 2013 and well into 2014. The film directed by Baz Lurhman and starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Carey Mulligan showcased some of the best styles of the 1920’s . Inspired by styles from the Prada and Miu Miu archives the stunning costume pieces were the creative genius of costume designer Catherine Martin and Prada powerhouse Miuccia Prada. Each outfit was designed to truly reflect the glamour and sophistication of the 1920’s. Almost 40 dresses embellished with crystals, sequins and pearls in shades of emerald, topaz and gold were designed for the film and provide the perfect inspiration for planning your own 1920’s Gatsby style wedding.
Here at White Avenue we love the elegant and sexy feel that the 1920’s inspires and the wealth of inspiration you can gather for your wedding, from dress style down to accessories.
The dresses seem to be the biggest draw of this 1920’s theme. Based on the traditional elegant style, 1920’s dresses are typically light and airy with a drop line waist often with elegant detailing around the neck. Designed to be less fitted and to allow for greater movement the dresses of the 1920’s were shorter, far more glamorous and often included lavish ornamentation.
Bridal designer Jenny Packman showcases some truly stunning gowns inspired by the 1920’s and the release of the film even saw her team up with Harrods to create a breath-taking Gatsby inspired window display.

You don’t have to stop at your own 1920’s dress why not consider dressing your bridesmaids in 1920’s flapper style gowns to get the full effect of the age. While the dress design was simple, twenties dresses were colourful, bold and embellished with all the best things; jewels, crystals, feathers and fringing.
And why stop at the dress, when there are so many accessories on offer! Accessorising your gown with a jewelled or feathered headpiece is a must have for every 1920’s bride. Showcased by Carey Mulligan in the film, Tiffany’s has designed a stunning headpiece along with some amazing 1920’s inspired jewellery.
And no 1920’s theme would be complete without lots and lots of pearls, a must have for any women in the 1920’s. Long strands of pearls can be an excellent accessory to add to your dress or even to decorate your tables.
The 1920’s inspired largely by the art deco style offers excellent opportunities to create a truly glamorous and elegant wedding to rival one of Gatsby’s great parties. Have a look at some of the stunning decorative ideas inspired by Gatsby and the 1920’s, from bold bright colours, pearls and stunning art deco table decorations, cakes and invites.
