You’ve had your big day and you’re about to embark upon your first holiday as newlyweds. You want adventure, you want romance; you want that once-in-a-lifetime trip. But planning a honeymoon can be a daunting task. Where do you look? Who can advise?
We recently chatted to Patrick Smith, a Travel Expert from Exsus – which specialises in luxury tailor-made honeymoons to destinations around the world including Europe, Asia, Africa, the USA, South America, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean. He invited us to ditch the guide books and the endless trawling through TripAdvisor, offering instead his encyclopaedic bank of travel wisdom!
- How did Exsus begin?
We started 13 years ago, back when the Internet was a largely undiscovered phenomenon. Exsus desired to find a new way of planning travel. During this time, our owners felt the industry lacked reliable in-the-know insights and expert destination advice for holiday planners. As passionate travellers, they wanted a service that offered a more personalised travel experience, one that transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary. They were eager to take people off the beaten track in order to discover the true beauty of the world.
- What makes Exsus different to other tour operators?
Exsus is all about bespoke luxury travel. We are a small company of passionate travellers, each with expert knowledge on different corners of the globe. Each of the hotels that feature on our website is handpicked by the destination specialist, who chooses only the very best in boutique. Unlike other tour operators, when we say luxury, we really mean it. Just tell us what your idea of luxury is, and we’ll tailor the holiday to your preferences – even down to the cocktails served upon arrival!
- If a bride or groom calls to enquire and says, “I want to book my honeymoon”. What happens next?
Maybe you have a specific idea of what you want, or maybe you are completely undecided – we can help with either. We’ll talk you though what we do and guide you to our website to browse some sample itineraries for inspiration. We like to get to know you over the phone, learning about your likes and dislikes, so that we can custom the honeymoon to suit you perfectly. We’ll then book every stage of the trip for you, creating a fully personalised itinerary.
- What’s the most memorable honeymoon you’ve ever booked?
It depends on what your preferences are, but a personal favourite of mine is the America’s Most Wanted itinerary that is currently featured on our website. Born out of an actual honeymoon I booked a while back, it takes you from Las Vegas to California on an unforgettable self-drive holiday. Taking in some of the best sights of the USA, it weaves through the Orange County, Yosemite National Park and the Napa Valley wine region, cruising along the picturesque Big Sur; undeniably one of the most scenic drives in the world.
- What is your absolute favourite destination?
I’m all about the beach. Somewhere like Mauritius’ Long Beach Resort, situated along an endless stretch of powdery white sand, with ocean views from every cabin. It’s a highly modern and sophisticated resort with luxury beach huts, where you while away the days lazing on the beach and sipping cocktails in complete privacy. That’s my idea of luxury.

- What are your top tips for booking honeymoons?
Don’t leave it too late. Take your time and plan it properly, so that once you embark upon your trip there’ll be nothing to worry about – except perhaps choosing where to eat or which bar to go to. In my experience, the best honeymoons are those which allow for both rest time and some time for the big adventures. It’s always good to start with something relaxing, allowing some time to unwind after the busy lead up to your wedding. Then opt for the big trip, such as a safari or a self-drive adventure, before finishing up at a luxurious retreat to end your romantic honeymoon in complete relaxation.
